Two Schools Buses Crash in North Carolina

Virginia Tolling Plans Prove Unpopular

Plans to place tolls on I-95 in Virginia are proving unpopular with residents, but that proposal from Gov. Bob McDonnell is likely to be considerably less controversial than what’s in store for the interstates and highways around Portsmouth, VA.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, 52 percent Virginians surveyed opposed tolls on I-95. This prompted the paper’s editors to write, “If Virginians don’t like that idea, they’re really going to hate what they have to pay to get around Hampton Roads.”

Tolls are almost certain to be placed at the entrances of the Midtown Tunnel and the Downtown Tunnel that link Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA. They are also likely to appear on the Martin Luther King Freeway in Portsmouth and on a new Jordan Bridge.

As experienced Portsmouth personal injury attorneys, my colleagues and I often report on car, truck and motorcycle accidents in and around the Midtown and Downtown Tunnels. On August 18, 2011, for instance, a motorcyclist was killed in Portsmouth when entering the Downtown Tunnel.

Congestion remains a major problem in the area. A recent study found drivers spent an average of 34 hours struck in congestion in 2010. During backups and heavy traffic, tempers can flare leading to road rage and other infractions.

The forthcoming tolls are intended to finance capacity and safety improvements in Hampton Roads, VA. However, we would be concerned if drivers ended up paying a heavy price without seeing adequate improvements.
